One of the most enormous damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan is nuclear explosion. The country has 54 operating nuclear reactors with a total installed generating capacity of around 49 GW, making it the 3rd-largest nuclear power generator in the world behind the US and France. Currently 11 of the nuclear reactors totaling around 9.7 GW, or about 20% of capacity, and 11-12 GW of thermal power generation, have been closed down. Indeed, 2.7 GW of nuclear power was already shut at the time of the earthquake for regular inspection. While nuclear takes up around 11% of total energy use in Japan (as of 2008), the nuclear industry generates more than one quarter of its electricity.<\/p>\n
