Financial Markets Mixed after Laden’s Death

Financial markets mixed on Monday with equities gaining, treasuries declining and commodities retreating. Gold initially jumped to a new record high of 1577.4 but gains were then reversed. The yellow metal is currently trading at 1553. Silver faced heavy selling pressure with the benchmark Comex contract slumping as much as -13% to 42.2 earlier in the day before recovering to 44. Some analysts attributed the market reaction to the death of Bin Laden, a founder of the al-Qaeda terrorist network. US President Barack Obama delivered the news that Laden was killed, together with other members of his family, in a US military operation. While Laden’s death might be considered as some progress in fighting against terrorism, we do not believe the risk is lowered as someone might have succeeded his place while his supporters may organize some retaliation activities after this event.
